Astro Bot has now sold more than 2.3 million copies

Astro Bot, PlayStation’s big 2024 exclusive wowed critics and PlayStation diehards alike with its mix of tight platforming and deep-cut cameos from the past 30 years of PlayStation.

It even won the coveted Game of the Year award at last’s year’s The Game Awards. But PlayStation has been notably quiet about the titles sales since it announced Astro Bot crossed the 1.5-million mark back in November.

To shed some more light on Astro Bot’s sales numbers, we thought we’d give you a sneak peek at our PlayStation data, including copies sold over time, some audience overlap with other titles, and the game’s popularity in different countries.

Let’s take a look.

Astro Bot’s game of the year win helped it cross the 2-million-sold mark

Our PlayStation estimates, which include copies sold and lifetime players on a daily level, show that Astro Bot finally crossed the 2-million milestone back on January 8 2025.

The game’s sales had begun to stabilise after hitting 1.5 million back in November, but the game of the year win on December 12 (and the resulting media hype and buzz) gave the game a second wind:

What else do Astro Bot players play?

While Astro Bot impressed critics, platformer fans, and PlayStation diehards alike, it did not hit mainstream appeal.

How do we know it only really resonated with those groups? Our audience overlap data!

The below image shows the single player games Astro Bot players are mostly likely to play. As you can see, they are all PlayStation first party:

This data tells us that Astro Bot mostly appeals to PlayStation first-party lovers, as expected. Our data also shows heavy overlap for deeper cuts like Returnal and Bloodborne.

Our data also suggests that platformer fans of course are also drawn to Astro Bot. In addition to Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart (played by 50.4% of Astro Bot players), there are high ‘’also played’’ numbers for platformers It Takes Two (42.0%), Sackboy: A Big Adventure (41.9%), and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (35.1%).

Astro Bot did surprisingly well in China

The US market unsurprisingly accounts for the highest share of Astro Bot players at 29.1%. But China – a traditionally mobile and free-to-play market – is Astro Bot’s #2 market by distribution, with 13.1%.

China accounts for more than twice the Astro Bot audience of the #3 market, the UK 6.4%. PlayStation’s Astro Bot promotion experiments in China – like a stage event at China Joy – clearly paid off. Given this early sign of success, we expect to see more experiments going forward.

While Astro Bot’s sales performance has not been as impressive as other PlayStation first-party titles, it was made with a smaller team (just ~60 people over three years), made a small but notable splash in China (a growing premium market), and cleaned up in awards season.

2.3 million copies sold might not seem like much, but Sony’s Astro Bot experiment clearly has bigger implications for PlayStation’s future.
