Last week’s biggest games on Steam (week 23) – indies, familiar faces, new games, and a few surprises
It was a big week for games last week. Nintendo finally launched the Switch 2 and sold 3.5 million units, Summer Game Fest’s many announcements led to Steam followers galore, and PlayStation and Xbox held some exciting showcases of their own.
But all this excitement didn’t stop gamers buying other games on Steam, so let’s dive into the top Steam games by revenues and copies sold in week 23 – that’s last week (June 2-8) for those of us who aren’t cursed with corpo brain. Must be nice.
Let’s kick off with revenues.
An old game, a new one, and a then-unreleased one generated the most revenues
As you can see below, Valve’s own Counter-Strike 2 generated $27.3 million, making it week 23’s top game by revenues – over twice as much as the #2 game.
While Counter-Strike doesn’t dominate mainstream conversation anymore, its in-game economy is still ticking along nicely and has now generated several billion dollars for Valve.
Elden Ring Nightreign continued to perform well, generating $12.6 million – selling another 393K copies – in week 23. While weekly copies sold are certainly slowing down, this lean, asset-reuse PVE experiment from FromSoftware has paid off.
Last week, Nightreign passed lifetime copies sold of 2 million on Steam alone (and over a million on PlayStation). And it’s still sitting on 2.6 million players’ Steam wishlists. Many of their wallets will spring into action with imminent discounts.
It was neck and neck for the #3 spot, but Dune: Awakening – which wasn’t even fully released – just edged out the competition with revenues of $11.0 million via its 274k copies sold between June 2 and June 8.
Dune: Awakening officially launched on June 10, after a five-day early access period, and has sold over 700K copies already. Its rewarding mix of fun-friction MMO survival mechanics and authentic rendition of the Dune IP’s – and Arrakis’ unforgiving environment – is finding success.
It should quite comfortably hit a million by the weekend. And it’s no surprise, as Funcom has been extremely communicative with fans and has been generating buzz all year.
Let’s take a quick break from the ranking to check out some of Dune’s pre-launch follower metrics and buzz.
Dune: Awakening’s pre-launch follower counts show a growing community looking for updates
While we often showcase our wishlist data, Steam followers are an important barometer for buzz too. After all, communities follow a game when they’re eager for updates on a title in their community activity feed. Wishlists show future purchase intent, but followers represent community.
Below is an image of Dune: Awakening’s follower count from April to June 11^th^.
As you can see, Dune: Awakening hit just shy of 200K before launch. Across all titles on Steam, just 10 titles have reached these heights pre-launch. To put this in perspective, Helldivers 2 had a third of these followers at this point in its product lifecycle (but shot to the moon right after).
Dune: Awakening has been highly anticipated since Funcom first announced it three years ago, but Funcom took things to new heights with some smart pre-launch marketing events:
- The game’s pre-launch campaign kicked off in earnest with April 25^th^’s Story Trailer, which currently has 2.3 million views on YouTube, set the tone of the narrative, and promoted the game’s beta weekend. The trailer helped Dune add another 10k followers in about a week.
- The beta weekend (May 9-12), available to those who preordered Dune, saw the biggest spike in followers (14K in three days, with 6K on the day the beta ended). Funcom also partnered with top streamers like Shroud and Sodapoppin for their Global LAN Party.
- Dune attracted another 10K followers in the 18 days post-beta, just over 500 a day on average, as it continued to flood (ironic) the market with pre-launch blogs, streamers, and trailers.
- Owing to the game’s MMO trappings, many players were curious about what to expect from the endgame. A live stream outlining the endgame dropped on May 30, providing a small but noticeable boost in followers ahead of the launch (early access on June 5 and full launch on June 10)
The key takeaway here is that when it comes to survival games, cinematic reveals can build the foundation, but playable experiences and endgame transparency convert interest into follows and – eventually – players.
Funcom’s community-building across socials and streaming channels was also well executed. The official Dune: Awakening Discord channel already has 140K members.
While the jury is still out on the long-term performance of Dune: Awakening, it’s off to a promising start.

With that out of the way, back to the Steam revenue top 5!
An indie RPG and a port of a PS5 success round off Steam’s revenue top 5
Deltarune, a pseudo-sequel to indie-RPG darling Undertale, released its long-awaited third and fourth chapters on June 4. In week 23, Deltarune generated revenues of $11.0 million via its 549K copies sold.
Deltarune has now sold 600K copies overall, half of them via the US, and 63% of the audience also played Undertale on Steam.
Deltarune has 2 million wishlists, and we expect many would-be players are waiting for all the chapters to drop to explore the game’s weird, wonderful, and – at times – twisted comedic RPG.
Raunchy action-adventure title Stellar Blade finally came to Steam on June 11, following over a year of exclusivity on PS5. In week 23, before launch, it generated $6 million in revenues, taking the #5 spot on the Steam ranking.
By its launch day (June 11), Stellar Blade sold a total of 544K lfietimes copies (revenues of $26.2 million). Over half of players are in China – again pointing to the importance of not just cherry-picking Western markets for data coverage.
With 116K followers and 1.6 million wishlisters, we’re expecting Stellar Blade to shift plenty more copies when it launches. We’re terrified of what the modding community has cooking, though.
Stellar Blade has attracted over 2 million players over on PlayStation. The Steam edition is on track to significantly bolster that player base.
Week 23’s top Steam games by copies sold
As you might expect, we’ve already covered some of the top games by copies sold in the revenues section, but there are some key differences to highlight.
Pricing means that the #1 spot for copies sold goes to Deltarune (#3 for revenues), owing to its $25 price point versus $40 for Nightreign (#2 by revenues and copies sold on Steam) and $50 for Dune: Awakening (#3 on both rankings).
As for games that aren’t in the revenues ranking, two indies took the last two spots. R.E.P.O ranked at #4 spot for copies sold in week 23, with 205K units. This should come as no surprise to those of you who read our monthly rankings (R.E.P.O was May’s top game).
R.E.P.O is now very close to selling 15 million copies. The indie co-op horror hit is performing well across markets, with its top countries being the US (25% of players), Russia (9%), Brazil (5%), and Japan (5%).
R.E.P.O is in early access and is only available in English currently. We expect Chinese localization and language options would shake things up significantly.
Rounding off the top 10 is Guilty as Sock!, a whacky multiplayer party game in which players play as a sock and take different roles in a courtroom (like judge or prosecutor). The game is as absurd as it is memeable, and its budget price of $5 is attracting a niche crowd.
Guilty as Sock! sold 176K copies in week 23, bringing its total copies sold to 353K (revenues of $1.4 million).
The game’s CCUs and DAUs are rapidly declining, and it’s selling fewer copies with each new day, so the game likely won’t have too much of a long tail. Unless something changes, it releases on more platforms, or a huge streamer picks it up.
But even if this is the last we see of Guilty as Sock! in our rankings, the game has found a niche audience and is a success story for the six-person team at Demon Max. It’s also extremely fun and worth a play for fans of Among Us (which 68% of Guilty as Sock! players have played).
As is often the case, the rankings were a mix of AAA, AA, and indies. This is the kind of versatility we love to see here at Alinea.
